IU Health Learning Alliance
background

I first met Linda Hainlen, Manager of Learning Solutions at IU Health, when she introduced herself after my Training Tips from Tinseltown presentation for the Central Indiana chapter of ASTD. That conversation started a two-year relationship where I got to speak four times to the hundreds of educators on staff with IU Health (then known as Clarian Health). Tinseltown was the first time I appeared in front of this group. As our relationship progressed, we eventually tackled the issues of burnout among trainers.

I produced both of the videos above as light-hearted ways of dealing with what could be a serious issue among healthcare professionals. And, once again, I pressed my daughters into service. It's amazing the type of performances you can encourage with the lure of playing with high-tech medical equipment and the promise of post-shoot Chicken McNuggets.

There were no conventional handouts used during this session. Instead, every attendee received an oven mitt in which they could stuff symbolic representations of 23 difference burnout avoidance techniques. Many of the staff use their oven mitts, and the tips inside them, to this day.

These sessions with IU Health led to recommendations to speak to the Indiana Central Association of Diabetes Educators and the Indiana Association of Healthcare Quality.
